When you become a Christian, a true follower of Jesus Christ, He gets you to heaven. When you become a disciple, He gets heaven down to you. These two sentences were on a perpetual calendar that I received, written by one of my favorite preachers and authors.
It sounded so simple, but it really is very profound and serious. But exactly what does discipleship mean? Sure, it is sharing the gospel of Jesus with others, but is also a directive of ACTION.
Sometimes I want to do so much for God. But He wants me to do only what He has called me to do. Sometimes I want to give so much. But HE wants me to give only what He has called me to give.
How do I please God who knows all, sees all, understands all, is everything!
In his gospel, Mark recorded the follow:
“Jesus sat down, called the twelve disciples, and said to them, ‘Whoever wants to be first must place himself last of all and be the servant of all’” (Mark 9:35 GNT).
I believe that Jesus is telling us that in order to be His disciples we must be willing to give ALL of ourselves to Him, with a special emphasis on serving.
But serving doesn’t necessarily mean the same to each person. So how can we know in what areas each of us, as individuals, has be called to serve? Good news… the Holy Spirit is inside of us to give us direction, counsel and wisdom.
I want to see heaven here. I want to be part of that. Sometimes that’s hard for me to do. Not so much in hearing what the Holy Spirit has said, but in my saying “yes” to what I hear. Many times, I know the answer, but I have discovered that the inspiration to take action toward that answer is to continually stay close to God.
Prayer is key. But in adding the “actions” and the “doing” is what will get the results God wants. So, whatever it is that God is calling you, me, us, to do, let us do it. The Good News needs to be told!
